Victorian Lace Today

ShawlI have always considered myself a lace phobic knitter. That is until I purchased a copy of Jane Sowerby’s Victorian Lace Today.

I am more of a technique book person than a coffee table pattern book person, but I could not resist the elegance of this book. I thought I was buying it for my library. I have had the book for several months and I haven’t placed it on a shelf.

I started with the shawl pictured above. I used JoJoland Melody. It is beginner level lace knitting. I couldn’t believe how relaxing I found the knitting. The pattern is very simple and had its own rhythm. The border was a thrill to knit. I was enthralled by the way the pattern repeat developed.

As soon as the shawl was finished, I knew I was in trouble. I had three major design projects in the works. All my knitting time was supposed to be used on those projects. But I couldn’t help myself.

First, I thought, I’ll make a scarf from the book. I made three different ones. Then, I decided that I just had to make one of the shoulder shawls. I had some of Elsbeth Lavold’s Silky Wool in my stash, so I decided to use it on a more complicated pattern.  I had yet another masterpiece.

My Victorian Lace Today story can go on and on. By this time next year, I will probably have made every design in the book.

  1. hi Carole,

i LOVE Jojoland and what you have done with it is inspiring: both for ease and beauty. why, i think i could complete that shawl too even though i am totally lace challenged. Which pattern was it in Jane’s book? I looked and looked but i must have missed it.
